We have chosen to name the nine awards after nine Hindu Goddesses in their nine different manifestations. They represent the different qualities in a woman from the compassionate one to the slayer of evil; the knowledgeable one and the bewitching beauty; and the epitome of abundance, prosperity and vitality. We wish to extract the attributes the Goddesses and relate them to real life women rather than limiting them to objects of worship. We further believe that men and women need to work together if we are to really accelerate the women empowerment process. Therefore, we choose to honor a male and a female recipient together under the Shakti category.

Besides the nine categories, this year we honored two women who gallantly worked during and post the devastating earthquake of 2015. We have selected them on the basis of their initiation, dedication and selflessness. Their work has not only made an immediate difference in the lives of quake affected communities but has been successful in initiating and establishing a long term program.

Celebrating Womanhood focuses the spotlight on female heroes who are inspirational leaders in the true sense. There is much to learn and replicate from their examples. It is now time for national level bodies to acknowledge their positive contributions and include them in the mainstream activities related to women empowerment. Looking forward to a more inclusive gender and development policy and implementation of the same!
